John Mahama will beat Nana Akufo-Addo in 2020 to make history..............
National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress Kofi Adams says John Mahama will win hands down, the race to lead the party, and proceed to beat President Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2020 elections to make history.
For him, it will be a miracle if former president Mahama lose the flagbearership contest to any of the about eight persons who have declared to contest the race scheduled for December 7, 2018.
“Of course, it will be a miracle for President Mahama not to be the flagbearer of NDC if he contests”, he said on New Day on TV3 Saturday.
Former President Mahama on Thursday announced his candidature for the party’s presidential primary, something Mr. Adams described as positive for the party.
“Mahama is best, I will say it again and again, he is the best”, Mr. Adam reiterated.
Asked if his position on Mahama does not in anyway compromise his role as the party’s executive, he explained that “being a party executive is not like being an electoral commissioner”.
He added that as an executive of the party, it is within his mandate to help the party win power and if it means supporting a particular candidate “come out and do it, don’t sit down and pretend to be neutral”.
Mahama will make history in 2020
In his estimation, the 2020 election will present an opportunity for a sitting president to be defeated for the first time in the fourth republic, by a former president.
A member of the New Patriotic Party, Gary Nimako, had suggested on the show that former President is no threat to the NPP in the 2020 election.
According to Mr. Nimako the 2016 general election was the first time in the history of the fourth republic that a sitting president, John Mahama, lost an election and by over a million votes difference.
“I don’t see why the NPP should worry about Mahama coming, what is the panic about? Someone we have beaten before, with all the incumbency advantage, with over a million votes?” Mr. Nimako quizzed rhetorically.
But the Mr. Adams disagreed with him, arguing there can always be “a first time” and that the 2020 election will equally present an opportunity where President Akufo-Addo will by former President John Mahama.
“He speaks as if the first time an opposition leader has beaten a sitting president means a first time will not happen again… so does he want us to accept and believe that the first time will only happen in 2016 and the first will never happen again? Is he suggesting that God has told him, or Ghanaians have told him that the first time will never happen again?”. Kofi Adam quizzed.
“I want to tell him here that another first time will happen in 2020 where a former president will defeat a sitting President if he dares contest with these failed performances or disastrous performance that we are seeing”, Mr. Adams stated.
According to him an election is not like boxing where when you beat somebody for the first time, you think you have tougher punches and muscles to beat the person all the time.
He said winning an election is “about what you tell the people and what you do,” stating the incumbent will be judged by their promises and what they have been able to do while the opposition will be judged by what they promise.
He claimed the NPP has failed Ghanaians, hence the NDC will come to power to continue from where they left off.
Mr. Nimako was however curious to know what exactly John Mahama will be telling Ghanaians after having risen through the ranks and becoming a president and eventually voted out.
He said he would not buy into the argument from the NDC that John Mahama spent the first 8 months of his administration in court for which reason it affected his output.
According to him, the court did not stop him from being a President of Ghana.
